HOW TO BLOCK PRINT

LEARN THE ART OF INDIAN BLOCK PRINTING

Use recommended equipment. Items available from The Arty Crafty Place

  • Foam mat underneath to guarantee good contact with wooden block
  • Sponge to apply paint – spread thinly – try not to squeeze
  • Fabric paint is the right consistency – no need to water down, fully intermixable – a little goes a long way!
  • Apply thin layer of paint evenly to block surface – do not rub or squeeze as this will clog the gaps
  • Work from the middle of your piece of fabric – fold or iron folds in the fabric to act as a guide if desired
  • Print background first
  • Press the block firmly onto the fabric surface, hold it still for a second then lift carefully. Do not rock the block as this may smudge the image
  • Allow paint to dry thoroughly
  • Cover with a pressing cloth
  • Fix using a hot iron moving all over the surface for 1-2 minutes or if you are printing a large piece of fabric it is possible to fix it on a hot setting for 10 minutes in a tumble dryer
  • Machine washable to 40°C
  • Embellish with stitch, beads, sequins, glitter fabric paint etc
